Biosecurity Implementation at small and medium poultry farms
Abstract
Biosecurity: Everyday measures that help minimise the risk of disease entering or spreading through a flock. Infection can be transmitted by new birds or on shoes, crates, vehicles or equipment. Poultry can also be exposed to disease by wild birds. Animals can be protected from these risks by implementing measures that restrict access, provide protection of feed and water, clean equipment, and monitor birds daily, and report any bird, which displays atypical symptoms, immediately. This article explains how these measures can create a practical farm system.
Organic approach to controlling ticks in cattle.
Abstract
Cattle farmers are constantly plagued with the problem of ticks which can cause severe diseases in cattle and irritate them. Farmers frequently resort to re-treatment with a tick killing chemical (acaricide). Treatment can be effective if applied and selected appropriately, but, as with any treatment, resistance can occur making chemical applications less effective over time. Regular inspection, veterinary diagnosis, responsible product use, new animal care and written treatment records are key components to a sustainable plan. This article outlines some more practical suggestions for the farmer to make to their herd.
