Abstract :
Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is one of the most popular beverages consumed worldwide, and it has received considerable attention for its health benefits, especially its potential benefit in weight management. This review examines the metabolism-enhancing features of green tea and its contribution to weight loss. Specifically, green tea is high in catechins, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), that enhance thermogenesis, fat oxidation, and energy expenditure. The combined effects of caffeine and polyphenols also enhance insulin sensitivity and regulate lipid metabolism. Additionally, there are other health benefits associated with green tea derived from its antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, and cardiovascular and neuroprotective effects. In general, green tea is considered to be safe, but excessive consumption might lead to side effects from caffeine. This review indicates that green tea is a natural and effective complement to weight reduction, and encourages increased studies to evaluate the long-term health impacts of consumption of green tea.
